The 6-function Manipulator shown here is a more compact design than the previous 7-function. However, the gearbox arrangement used to give a neat hemisphere of movement for the jaw, together with jaw rotate, has resulted in the need for a bulky forearm. Nevertheless, this manipulator has a surprising level of dexterity, and its smaller form ensures it will fit into the frame of most Work Class ROVs whereas the 7-function arm shown previously limits its own usefulness as a result of its large size.
The relative cost of these two manipulators means that the 7-function may be used in preference to the more expensive smaller arm, even though the former did not fit the vehicle, resulting in the work piece being far from the cameras at the limit of visibility.
