Telerobotics - Basics
Manipulators- Robot Arms
Work Class ROV
Eyeball Class ROV

This is the gripper of a Schilling Robotics Orion rate arm. The jaws on this are of the overlapping digit type, allowing a good grip on irregular shaped or cylindrical objects and used where a parallel type jaw will lose its grip under load. This arm is fitted to a sub sea cable maintenance vehicle and is often used to lift a cable from the sea bed to facilitate cutting it prior to a repair. The increased use of rate arms may also relate to the levels of operator skill needed - although a skilled operator can use a position feedback arm to great effect and greatly reduce the time needed to do any task, a less experienced operator will take much longer and often causes damage to the manipulator, the ROV and the work piece. With a rate arm progress is slower but the less experienced operator has more time to judge his next move
The standard manipulator pair in the oil and gas industry is a 5-function gripper on the left and a 6- or 7-function position feed back arm on the right. This combination allows the ROV to grip onto part of a BOP or the guide posts of a well guide base with its left arm and perform its task with the right . The ROV shown on the right has just this combination, although the right arm is a 6-function feedback arm.
